California Cannabis Laws for Adults 21+: The Basics
Guide · Good Weed Co Newsroom · 2026-10-27
California voters legalized adult-use cannabis with Proposition 64 in 2016. Whether you live in the Coachella Valley, the High Desert or you're visiting for the weekend, here are the basics every adult should know. (This is general information, not legal advice — local rules can add restrictions.)
Who can buy
Adults 21 and older with a valid government ID can buy from licensed retailers and licensed delivery services. Medical patients with a valid recommendation have some additional options.
How much you can carry
Adults 21+ can possess up to:
- 28.5 grams (about 1 ounce) of cannabis flower, and
- 8 grams of concentrated cannabis.
Growing at home
Adults may grow up to six plants per residence, out of public view. Cities and counties can set their own rules for outdoor growing, so check locally.
Where you can't consume
- In public places
- Anywhere tobacco smoking is prohibited
- Within certain distances of schools, day cares and youth centers while children are present
- On federal land — including national parks like Joshua Tree National Park — where cannabis remains illegal under federal law
Private residences are generally fine, but landlords, hotels and rentals can set their own rules.
Cannabis and cars
- Never drive impaired. Driving under the influence of cannabis is illegal, just like alcohol.
- You can't consume while driving or riding as a passenger.
- Keep cannabis in a sealed container or in the trunk while driving.
Crossing borders
Taking cannabis out of California — even to another legal state — is against federal law. That includes flying.
Buy licensed
Licensed products are lab-tested and come in child-resistant packaging. When you order from a licensed delivery service, your ID is checked at the door.
