How to Store Cannabis in Desert Heat (Coachella Valley & High Desert Guide)

If you live in the Coachella Valley or the High Desert, you already know summer doesn't mess around. Days well over 100°F, bone-dry air and blazing sun are great for pool days — and terrible for cannabis. Here's how to keep your flower, edibles and vapes tasting the way they did the day they arrived.

The four enemies: heat, light, air and dryness

  • Heat evaporates terpenes (the aroma) and speeds up the breakdown of THC.
  • Light, especially direct sun, degrades cannabinoids.
  • Air dries flower out and oxidizes it over time.
  • Dryness — desert humidity can drop into the single digits, which turns buds crumbly and harsh.

The sweet spot

Most storage guides recommend keeping flower somewhere cool (around 60–70°F), dark, and at a relative humidity of roughly 55–62%. In the desert, that means indoors — never in the garage, the patio or the glove box.

Flower

  • Keep it in an airtight glass jar with the lid closed.
  • Add a two-way humidity pack (58% or 62% are popular sizes) to stop it drying out.
  • Store it in a closet or drawer away from windows and appliances that run warm.
  • Skip the freezer: frozen trichomes get brittle and can snap off when you handle the bud.

Edibles

Chocolates and gummies can melt or fuse together in a hot car in minutes. Keep them in their original child-resistant packaging in a cool cupboard, and check the label for "best by" guidance. Always store edibles out of reach of kids and pets — they look like candy.

Vape carts and disposables

Heat thins cannabis oil, which can lead to leaks. Store carts upright, at room temperature, and never leave them on a car dashboard. In Twentynine Palms or Joshua Tree in August, a parked car can get far hotter than the air outside.

Concentrates

Keep wax, badder and live resin in their sealed containers somewhere cool and dark. Many people refrigerate long-term concentrate storage — let the container come back to room temperature before opening so condensation doesn't form.

Quick desert checklist

  • Glass jar + humidity pack for flower
  • Cool, dark cupboard — never the car
  • Carts stored upright
  • Everything in child-resistant packaging, away from kids and pets
