Live Resin, Rosin, Distillate & More: A Friendly Guide to Concentrates
Guide · Good Weed Co Newsroom · 2026-10-27
The concentrates section can look like a foreign language: badder, sauce, shatter, rosin. Here's a friendly decoder for shoppers across Palm Desert and the High Desert.
What is a concentrate?
A concentrate is cannabis with most of the plant material removed, leaving the resin — the cannabinoids and terpenes. That makes concentrates much stronger than flower, so a little goes a long way.
How they're made: solvent vs. solventless
- Solvent-based extracts use something like butane, propane, ethanol or CO₂ to pull resin from the plant, which is then purged out. Licensed labs test the finished product.
- Solventless extracts use only ice water, heat and pressure.
The main families
- Live resin — made from plants that were frozen fresh right after harvest instead of dried. Freezing helps keep more of the original terpenes, so live resin is known for big, true-to-the-plant flavor.
- Rosin — solventless; made by pressing flower or hash between heated plates. Live rosin starts from fresh-frozen ice-water hash and is a favorite of flavor chasers.
- Distillate — highly refined THC oil with very high potency and little natural flavor. It's common in vape carts and edibles, often with terpenes added back in.
- Cured resin — like live resin, but made from dried and cured plants.
Textures you'll see on the menu
- Shatter — glassy and brittle
- Wax / budder / badder — soft and creamy
- Sauce — runny terpene-rich liquid with crystals ("diamonds")
- Crumble — dry and easy to break apart
Texture mostly comes down to how the extract was handled after extraction; it doesn't automatically mean one is stronger.
Using concentrates responsibly
- Start with a tiny amount — about the size of a grain of rice or smaller.
- Lower temperatures keep flavor and are gentler.
- Store them sealed, cool and dark (desert heat melts and degrades them fast).
